The Sugarplum Fairy hangs up the apron

Merry Christmas (a bit early) to all my loyal and highly-appreciated customers! I'm sorry to inform you that I won't be baking for profit this year, but rather just to put smiles on the faces of my own family.  I am back to paid full-time employment so I won't have time to be the Sugarplum Fairy.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight.

Find me on Facebook

Hi everyone.  The Christmas season seems ages ago now that the sun is starting to feel warm again.

I've decided to work on expanding my baking business by offering one or two items each week through my new Facebook page.  You can find the Sugarplum Fairy Facebook page here.

Follow us/like us/check often to see what I'll be baking that week.  Leave a comment or send me a message to place your order.  Baking will be ready on Thursday each week.  I will put the focus on freezable baking and things good for school lunches or weekend company.  Pies can be done anytime upon request.

This week is Buttertart and Lemon Square week.  Next week the focus will be on chocolate.  I look forward to baking for you!

Christmas 2012

After a (very!) long hiatus, the Sugarplum Fairy is donning her apron for another Christmas season.  I'm very excited to be back baking for you and am very pleased to be offering a fairly full line of gluten-free baking as well as my regular wheat-based baking this year.

As you may recall, I was diagnosed with gluten-intolerance two years ago.  I've spent the last two years re-learning how to bake so that my gluten-free recipes are as good as my wheat-based recipes.  I've finally got it figured out.

My price list is ready, my oven has been cleaned and my wooden spoons are quivering in anticipation of the busy season ahead.

All of my baking is designed to be freeze-able so you can store it away and pull it out when needed.

I'm offering a new package this year for those times during the holidays when you need a hostess gift.  You can store it in your freezer and pull it out when something special is needed to say "Thanks".

Here are the details for this year:

1.  Please look at my Christmas 2012 page to view the packages and by-the-dozen price lists I am offering this year.
2.  Please email me with your order or call me at 613-883-4145.
3.  Please have your order in by December 10 for delivery during the period of December 17-22 (I still may be able to accommodate your order after December 10 but I can't guarantee it).

Please note that I am only able to serve customers in the Ottawa/Gatineau region of Canada.
I look forward to baking for you again!

Easter Price List 2011

Welcome Spring! I am so happy to see my wee flowers popping up out of the garden. And I'm so happy it is almost Easter. I'm excited to be offering Easter baking this year. Below you will find my price list. Please note that due to fuel prices I'm not able to offer free delivery any longer unless you live in Alta Vista or South Keys. If you live elsewhere in Ottawa, I can deliver for a fee or, of course, you can always pick up your baking at my home.

Below you'll find my Taste of Spring package as well as several pies, Paska (Mennonite Easter bread) and butter tarts as well as homemade Easter cream eggs (hooray!). As always, custom packages are available. Just let me know what you'd like!

Lastly, I'm very excited to be offering some gluten-free baking now. The GF list is at the bottom of this post. Please note that while these recipes do not contain gluten, I do use gluten in my kitchen and my utensils and mixer, while cleaned between recipes, do come in contact with gluten.

If you would like to place an order or just ask a question, please contact me using the information in the sidebar. Please have all orders in for Easter by April 16.

Easter goodies

Here in Ottawa we are all pining for crocuses, daffodils and tulips. While the temperatures outside may not be spring-like yet, Easter reminds us that spring is indeed here.

I will be putting up a price list for Easter shortly but just to get you thinking about Easter treats, here are some of the recipes I plan to offer:

  • Lemon Puff Pie
  • Key Lime Pie
  • Acadian Sugar Pie
  • Shoefly Pie
  • Butter tarts
  • Old Fashioned Lemon Squares
  • Seafoam Chews
  • Caramel Toffee Squares
  • Paska (Mennonite Easter Bread)
  • Rolo cookies
  • Homemade Easter Cream Eggs
In a cruel twist of fate, the Sugarplum Fairy has discovered that she is gluten intolerant. Rather than crying myself to sleep each night, I've decided to embrace this as a learning opportunity and work out some really good gluten-free recipes. As such, I'm able to offer the following recipes as gluten-free:
  • Butter tarts
  • Old Fashioned Lemon Squares
  • Homemade Easter Cream Eggs
  • Key Lime Pie
  • Acadian Sugar Pie
Please note however that I still do bake recipes in my kitchen with regular flour which means that my mixers and pans do come in contact with wheat flour.

Christmas is over but the baking goes on....

My friends, although the tree is down, the presents unwrapped and the cookies eaten, I am still baking... or at least, willing to bake. I am indeed taking a little break from the kitchen right now, that is, until someone calls needing cookies.

I continue to be at your beck and call for cookies, pies and squares. Hosting a baby or wedding shower? Having family or friends out of town for the weekend? Hosting a skating party? Let me do the baking for you. Have a browse through the photos at the side or through my previous price lists and let me know what sort of baking you're interested in. I'll give you a price and a delivery date as fast as you can say Hello Dollies!

All full

Apologies to anyone who is left disappointed but I'm not able to take anymore orders for Christmas. The wonderful coverage on SavvyMom Ottawa and word-of-mouth has meant that I'm at baking capacity! However, if you are planning a New Years celebration and would like some goodies, please see the packages below or pick and choose and I'd be happy to put together a custom order. Thanks for your patronage!

Recipe List

Caramel Toffee Squares Will put you in mind of a Twix Bar. A shortbread crust covered in thick caramel and topped with chocolate.

Choco Toffee Snowballs After one taste, it quickly became one of The Sugarplum Fairy’s favourite cookies. This is a classic Christmas cookie that will leave you wishing Christmas came more than once a year.

Chocolate or Butterscotch Confetti Will take you back… straight to the ‘80s! Mini marshmallows covered in melted chocolate or butterscotch chips and peanut butter. A childhood favourite!

Double Brownies If you like traditional chocolate brownies, imagine them swirled with butterscotch and topped with a brown sugar icing.

Gingersnaps Mum’s famous ginger cookies. Wonderful for dunking.

Hello Dollies The Sugarplum Fairy’s most asked for recipe. A buttery graham cracker crust layered with sweetened condensed milk (you already know it will be good!), pecans, chocolate chips and coconut.

Marble Swirls Chocolate and vanilla, the perfect combination. This crisp cookie is a marble cookie perfect to accompany coffee, hot chocolate or nothing at all!

Nanaimo Bars No Canadian dessert tray would be complete without them.

Orange Kisses A shortbread-type cookie, delicately formed into a bite-size round and topped with a dollop of orange-flavoured icing and garnished with orange zest. Sure to be a new Christmas favourite.

Shortbread A traditional family recipe. Our Scottish roots serve us well in this recipe. One (very large) pan contains a full pound of butter. If you’ve been wanting a proper shortbread, you’ve come to the right place.

Back open for business!

Hi everyone! After an almost two-year hiatus, The Sugarplum Fairy is set to bake again.

There will be some changes this year and some new recipes. I plan to have all this information up in the next day or so... so stay tuned!

See you in 2010?

Hi everyone. Thanks for your good wishes regarding my health. It seems fate has dealt me an ironic blow. Things are pointing to me having Celiac Disease which means that, if true, I'll never be able to eat gluten again. Know what that means? Nothing with flour, rye or barley! Not great for a Sugarplum Fairy such as myself.

I'll be getting a diagnosis (I hope) in the next few weeks.

However, our family is moving for 14 months to Waterloo, Ontario and so the business will not be in operation again until Fall 2010.

I do hope that some of you come back and think of ordering from me then. And, in line with my new sympathies for those of the Celiac persuasion, I will be offering a complete line of gluten-free baking. I plan to spend the next year doing research. Lots and lots of research (and taste-testing!).

See you back here in 2010!

Business suspended for the moment

Hi everyone. Due to my own health issues recently, I'm having to suspend the business until further notice. I'll be having tests done shortly I hope that will indicate what is going on with me and lead to me feeling better soon.

Andrea did a beautiful job with the photos.... again! The woman has supreme talent with a camera and a great eye for food photography. Some of what she has done is on the sidebar to the left. These are the spring recipes that I'll be offering. A list of prices and combinations will (hopefully!) be up by the end of day tomorrow.

Now accepting orders for New Year's

I want to sincerely thank everyone for your overwhelming support, interest and, of course, orders. In fact, I've had so much interest that as of now I will not be accepting anymore orders before Christmas (unless they are very small). I apologize if anyone is left disappointed.

However, I am accepting orders for New Year's and beyond. Click here for my price list and recipes.

Thanks again, everyone!

No more orders week of Dec 7 to 13

Hi all. I'm not able to accept any more orders for the week of December 7 to 13. This is a nice position to be in! I've had a high number of orders for that week and to accept any more would mean a few all-nighters. So, instead, if you want to order, I'm still accepting orders for the weeks following that.

For my price list and recipe descriptions, please click here.
